About this agency

Description

Unley is a suburb in Adelaide's inter-south. Unley High School is now situated in the nearby suburb of Netherby, 6 km from the city centre.

Unley High School opened in 1910 on the site of Unley Primary School and was then known as Unley District High School. The school's first Teacher in Charge was Lionel H. Jeffries who had transferred from Adelaide High School and remained at the school until 30 June 1911 when another teacher from Adelaide High School, James Leonard Rossiter, took over.

It wasn't until 1915 that the school got its first Head Teacher (later Head Master) in the form of Benjamin John James Gates who also in his first decade at the helm transitioned the school to a new site at Kyre Ave, Mitcham. This site is now the home of Mitcham Girls High School. The school gradually moved to its current site in Netherby in the early 1960s as the student population continued to grow with the post-WWII baby boom.

Attendance at the school in its inaugural year numbered 176 with the number quickly rising to over 500 by 1922. The growth continued with 1006 students enrolled in 1940. By the 1950s and 60s more high schools were opened in the southern Adelaide area which brought the enrolment numbers down to a more manageable level. The school throughout the 2000s has a steady annual enrolment of approximately 1250 students.

Notable alumni include former Governor of South Australia and physicist Mark Oliphant, children's entertainer Peter Combe and Australia's first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
