Description
In February 1958 the co-educational secondary school opened with 5 teaching staff, the first Principal being Mr R Murray MacPherson, and an enrolment of 176 students. At this time there were four mixed classes housed in four wooden classrooms. In 1962 the new school building, domestic arts and woodworking centres were occupied, followed by the canteen in 1964, the library and typing rooms in 1971, and in 1972 the third wing of the main building. The new hall was officially opened in 1974, the music suite opened in pre-fab buildings in 1975, with the senior and junior halls being occupied the following year. The biology garden that was established in 1980 was reclaimed as a sporting and recreation area in 1998.
In 1990 the CARE (Co-operation, Accountability, Responsibility and Equity) policy was introduced. A Resource Centre was opened in 1991 to provide an area for reading and developing research skills. In 1998 Henley High School became a specialist sports school, while continuing to provide a balanced years 8 to 12 curriculum. The school has strong community links and in 1998/99 entered into agreements with DETE, the Charles Sturt Council and community groups which resulted in new netball/tennis courts and a new on-site gymnasium.
