Description

The City of Playford came about as a merger between City of Elizabeth and the City of Munno Para in 1997.

The City of Playford is the most northern local government area of metropolitan Adelaide supporting a myriad of land uses, including commercial, residential, horticultural, industrial, manufacturing and open space. Located 30 kilometres from the Adelaide CBD, the City of Playford takes up an area of 346 square kilometres, and is made up from 35 suburbs. The City of Playford is the third largest council area in metropolitan Adelaide.

Named after one of South Australia's most influential leaders, Sir Thomas Playford, this region is one of the State's fastest growing council areas.

History of the area:

Economic development of the area occurred with the commencement of wheat farming and gold mining, and with this came the development of many of the major roads, hotels and smaller townships in the area. Migration to the area was strong in the 1950s and 1960s, and this has contributed to the prominent horticultural activities in the Virginia and Angle Vale areas.

A housing development program was introduced in the 1950s to assist the State's economic development and deal with the subsequent housing shortage that was occurring. Along with the purchase of 3000 acres of land, Elizabeth was carefully planned, built and launched to the people of South Australia. It became the first suburban area within the City of Playford. In more recent times, a large number of housing estates have also been developed and built.

The Council offices are located at Warooka Drive, Smithfield, 5114.
