About this agency
Description
The District Council of Talunga was proclaimed on 1 September 1853, and was divided into 5 wards - Mount Pleasant, Blumberg, Mount Torrens and North and South Gumeracha. W.B. Randell formed the township of Gumeracha 1853. The Traveller's Inn was where the meetings were held until March 1863, before the meetings moved to Napoleon Bonaparte, Blumberg. This was the first of many moves made by the District Council of Talunga and by its successor, the District Council of Gumeracha.
In 21 March, 1935, the District Council of Para Wirra, which was part of the District Council of Mount Crawford amalgamated with the District Council of Talunga, forming the District Council of Gumeracha. The Council was going to extend the Institute building and make other modifications to the town. This was reneged by the ratepayers and they took the council to court. The District Council CEO received threats because of the proposed upgrade. Due to the ratepayers action the proposal did not eventuate. The District Council of Gumeracha was amalgamated with the District Councils of East Torrens, Stirling and Onkaparinga on 1.7.1997 and is now referred to as the Adelaide Hills Council.
