Description

Goodwood Primary School is an R - 7 school located 4km from the GPO.

A school room was built on Goodwood Road in 1879 following a successful deputation from the Unley Council, headed by Mr. W. Townsend, for educational facilities for the children of Goodwood. Mr. John Wilson was the first Headmaster and fifteen children enrolled to attend when the school opened in June. By the end of the year, the student population had increased to thirty-two.

In 1880, a new brick and bluestone building designed to accommodate 200 students was built. By 1885, two additional classrooms needed to be built to accommodate a further 120 students. By 1921, the school had 846 students.

An Infant School was opened in 1923, with Miss Hervey as Headmistress. The next year, the student population across both schools was 900 (238 infants and 662 primary).

In 1925, Goodwood became a Central School - one of several in the Adelaide metropolitan area. It took on a Super Primary department for students two years beyond primary school-level. In 1929, a marble drinking fountain was erected in front of the school to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary.

In 1932, a new building was built on the corner of Lily and Hardy Streets, Goodwood Park. This school later became Goodwood Boys' Technical School, when the Super Primary departments of all Central Schools were converted to technical schools at the end of 1939. Female Super Primary students were transferred to the newly-named Unley Girls' Junior Technical School (formerly Unley Central School's Super Primary). Goodwood Central School reverted back to being a primary school, with no enrolments beyond Grade 7.

The 1950s saw the start of a large post-war influx of migrants, mainly of Greek origin, to the Goodwood area. Enrolments peaked around 500 in the 1970s, with children from non-English speaking backgrounds representing around 70%.

The Infant School was demolished in November 1973 and was replaced by a Junior Primary Open Space Unit on Hampton Street by February 1975. The rest of the school was demolished and replaced between 1975 and 1977, with the official opening occuring on 10 June 1977.

As of 2016, the school offers a range of extra-curricular activities for its students, including a community garden and a choir, and provides English as an Additional Language (EALD) support to students.

Some of the more prominent past scholars of Goodwood Primary School (and predecessors) are:

- Sir Mark Oliphant (1908-1909): eminent scientist and former Governor of South Australia
- Frank Walsh (1907-1912): represented Goodwood in State Parliament (1941 to 1956) and was Premier of South Australia (March 1965 - June 1965)
- Geoffrey Thomas Virgo (Infants 1922-1924): member for Ascot Park
- The Honourable Mr Justice (Howard) Zelling (1924-1927): Adelaide Supreme Court Judge.
