About this agency

Description

Also known as the Local Government Association of South Australia, Local Government Association Inc. The Local Government Association (later Local Government Association Inc.) was formed in 1896 when members of the Municipal Association and District Councils Association combined to form the new Association (1).

It was formed to 'promote the intersts and protect the rights of Local Government in South Australia' and to 'take any necessary action in connection with any subject or legislation affecting Local Government and to assist generally in carrying out the provisions of the Local Government Act' (2). The conduct of its business was governed by a constitution which provided for the payment of an annual membership subscription fee from Municipal and District Councils to the Association (3). This contribution was revised and expanded in 1936, the objectives of the Association remaining substantially unchanged (4).

In 1900 the District Councils' Association amalgamated with the Local Government Association (5). Sometime later however, a new Municipal Association was formed. On July 1 1968, the Municipal Association was dissolved once more in favour of the Local Government Association (6). By virtue of the Local Government Act Amendment Act No.2 of 1975, the Local Government Association became a statutory body (7).

For the Charter of the Eyre Peninsula Local Government Association see the SA Government Gazette, No. 37, 3/7/2008, pp. 3160-3184.
