About this agency

Description

Chicago School opened in 1914 with three class rooms and three teachers, the Headmaster being John Lewis Broadbent. In 1930, the area of Chicago was renamed Kilburn, with the school following suit in 1931.

In the 1930's and 1940's many South Australian Housing Trust houses were being built in the Kilburn area, with the numbers of student attending the school increasing. By 1945 the school was filled to capacity, and land was purchased for a new school on the opposite side of Churchill Road. The new school was completed in 1950. Children in Grade 3 to 7 moved into the new school, with the old school remaining in use as the Infant School.

Enrolments remained high until affected by redevelopment of the suburb of Kilburn, commenced in 2003. In 2008/9, enrolments were stable at approximately 110 in the School and 22 in the Preschool.

Kilburn Primary School and PreSchool will be closing at the end of 2010. It is merging with Gepps Cross Primary School and the Blair Athol Kindergarten to form the Inner North Birth to Year 7 School as part of the 'Education Works' strategy. The new school will open for the commencement of the 2011 school year.

For an early history of the school see GRG18/345/16.
