About this agency

Description

Prior to the establishment of a dedicated building, mentally ill people were accommodated in the Adelaide Gaol.

In 1846 the government leased a house on the north-east corner of Section 264, District A (Parkside), the site of the present Glenside Hospital. This first asylum at Parkside continued in use until 1852, when overcrowding at Parkside led to calls for a new asylum to be built.

In 1852 the Adelaide Asylum opened on North Terrace, and the building at Parkside reverted to its original owner.

Same agency as GRG34 - different archival control system.
