About this agency
Description
Adelaide Girls' High School was formed in 1951, following the separation of male and female students of Adelaide High School. Adelaide High School had been formed in 1908 as an amalgamation of the Advanced School for Girls, the Grote Street Model School, and the Pupil Teacher Training School.
By the 1930s, overcrowding led to male and female students being accommodated on two separate campuses - boys were in buildings in Currie Street and girls were at the Grote Street site. In 1951, new buildings were built on West Terrace on the site of the former Observatory. This site became the Adelaide Boys' High School and the Adelaide Girls' High School remained in Grote Street.
In 1977, the two schools amalgamated to become Adelaide High School again. Administratively, they were the same school but students were still split across the two campuses. The girls' school moved to West Terrace, on the same site as the boys' school, in 1979.
As at March 2021, no records from this school have been transferred to State Records' custody. They are believed to be held by Adelaide High School.
