About this agency
Description
Ru Rua Nursing Home opened as a public hospital in North Adelaide in 1974 (1) and was operated by Intellectually Retarded Services until 1982 and then the Intellectually Disabled Services Council from 1982 onwards. The Home provided convalescent care for children and adults.
'Ru Rua' is a Maori-Polynesian word meaning 'both equally'. (2) The houses which made up Ru Rua Nursing Home were purchased by a group of doctors in 1920 who established the Ru Rua Private Hospital. (2) In 1974 it was declared a public hospital. (1)
In 1981 when Estcourt House at Grange was renovated the children moved from North Adelaide to Grange and Estcourt House became known as Ru Rua Nursing Home. The Home closed in 1989.
