Edwardstown Industrial School, later Glandore Industrial School, Children's Home and Boys' Home (GA3234)

The Edwardstown Industrial School was a receiving home for children who had been made wards of the State. It was renamed to Glandore Industrial School in 1950 and was later known as the Glandore Children's Home (1958 - 1966) and Glandore Boys' Home (1966 - 1973).

It opened in 1898 as a home for boys and girls. It replaced the Industrial School at Magill (see GA3233), on the site of the former Girls' Reformatory. Children generally stayed at the Industrial School for a short time before being 'boarded out' (fostered or apprenticed).

From 1928, it only took in boys between the ages of six and eighteen. Girls and younger boys were sent to Seaforth Convalescent Home. From the 1930s, Edwardstown Industrial School was used as a Remand Home for children awaiting court appearances.

It was renamed 'Glandore Industrial School' in 1950 to reflect the name of the suburb in which was located. It was renamed 'Glandore Children's Home' in 1958 under the 'Maintenance Act Amendment Act 1958', which discontinued the term 'Industrial School'. It became known as the 'Glandore Boys' Home' from 1966, reflecting that it only housed boys.

Glandore Boys' Home closed in 1973 after the passing of the 'Community Welfare Act 1972' and a move away from large institutions to more of a 'cottage home' system. Glandore Family Home, which provided short-term emergency care or care for children on remand, had opened on the site in 1972. Several buildings on the site were also converted to cottage homes.
