About this agency
Description
The Lotteries Commission of South Australia (SA Lotteries) is a statutory authority established by the State Lotteries Act, 1966. The Lotteries Commission was charged with the responsibility of conducting lotteries effectively, efficiently, fairly and honestly. The Commission administered the first lottery in South Australia, which was drawn on 29 May 1967.
In March 1981, the Commission joined the Australian Lotto Bloc, which allowed South Australian Lotto players the opportunity to play for larger prize pools than had been the case in State-based games. The Lotteries Commission now participates in the National Lotto Bloc, the Powerball Bloc and the Australian Soccer Pools Bloc. These Blocs, in which all Australian States and the Northern and Australian Capital Territories participate, promote, operate and enhance where appropriate the games of Saturday Lotto, Tuesday Oz Lotto, Powerball, Super 66 and The Pools according to uniform regulations. With the exception of the pooling of prize money, each Bloc member is legally, economically and organisationally independent.
The Lotteries Commission distributes funds raised through its business activities to the Hospitals Fund and the Recreation and Sport Fund.
