About this agency
Description
The Motor Accident Commission was a Statutory Authority established to carry on redefined functions of the former Statutory Authority, and now corporatised, State Government Insurance Commission.
The Commission was governed by a board of Directors that was directed by the Minister.
The board was made up of 3 to 10 people who are appointed by the Governor. The Governor also appoints the chair of the board. (Reference: Motor Accident Commission Act 1992, Section 4-6).
The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) was South Australia's Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurer and provided compensation to victims of road crashes.
The MAC funded the South Australian road safety mass media campaign and supported road safety programs aimed at reducing death and injury on our roads. MAC we not road safety experts, nor did they make the rules. MAC worked closely with organisations such as the South Australian Police and Transport SA to help reduce road crashes. The agency's aims were to provide a financially secure, affordable and equitable system of motor vehicle bodily injury insurance to serve the interests of South Australians, and to fund projects that help reduce death and injury on South Australian roads. (Reference: MAC website - www.mac.sa.gov.au/pages/about-mac/default.asp of 09 July 2002.)
The MAC closed down its operations from 30 June 2019. Compulsory Third Party insurance was privatised, road safety initiatives moved to SA Police, road safety partnerships and sponsorships moved to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and all other matters were transferred to the South Australian Financing Authority (SAFA).
