About this agency
Description
Minda Home was established in Fullarton in 1898 as "The Minda Home for Weak-minded children". In 1911 it moved to a new site in Brighton and shortened its name to Minda Home, an incorporated body run by a board of management. It provided accommodation and special training for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
In 1962 the Education Department took over responsibility for the Minda Home School. Prior to this the Department provided only the Head Teacher, with the Board of the Home providing all other staff, buildings, teaching materials and equipment. Once it became a Departmental school the Minda Home School fell under the supervision of the Psychology Branch.
Temporary wooden classrooms were provided in 1962 to replace the previous poor accommodation, with planning for a more permanent school buildings. The land the school was on was owned by Minda Home Incorporated, and there was discussion with the Education Department regarding either the transfer or lease of the land to the Education Department.
The school had an enrolment of 143 children in 1962, with a projected 160 more enrolling in the school in the following years. In 1968 the enrolment was 350 with 35 staff.
The school provided special education both for children resident at Minda Home, as well as older 'mentally retarded' children living in the south and west districts of Adelaide who attended the senior school.
Minda Special School closed in 1997. The Home continued to provide accomodation at Brighton as Minda Incorporated.
