Notes regarding Cox's Creek Convict Depot:

'Instructions having been received from the Secretary of State prohibiting the transportation of offenders from the colony, Ordinance no. 18 of 1851 was in consequence passed by the Legislative Council under the provisions of which a convict Depot was formed at Cox's Creek for the execution of Public Works there, but which establishment proved a failure.

'This establishment was broken up, the Prisoners returned to Gaol, and the overseers and Guards discharged on the 26th August, one Overseer remaining in charge of Stores until there is delivery to the Sheriff. 21 October 1852.' [Year book containing statistical and other information prepared for the Colonial Office, 1852, p. 129. (Accession 54)]

'In consequence of the receipt of instructions from the Secretary of State prohibiting the transportation of Convicts from the Colony a Labor Depot was established at Cox's Creek in June 1852 - the arrangements however proved a failure and the Establishment was broken up on the 26th August 1852, as explained in the Blue Book of that year.

'A Stockade having been erected outside the Walls of the Adelaide Gaol, the Convict Establishment was again revived on the 1st July 1853 and the Prisoners under sentence of hard labor were employed in breaking stone therein.'
