About this agency
Description
The licensing authority, originally known as the Licensing Bench, came into existence in 1869, but did not have control over all types of licences. At the time South Australia was divided into several licensing districts each with its own Licensing Court and a Magistrate. A change in legislation In 1880 granted licensing authorities the power to grant licences.
The Licensing Act of 1967 completely the changed the way in which the Licence Bench operated. The Licensing Bench became the Licensing Court of South Australia and established as a Court of record. The Court records of proceedings became open for public access and have continued to be eversince.
