About this agency

Description

The office of the State Tourist Bureau was opened in Adelaide on 17 August 1908, headed by a Director responsible to the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration as Minister. In July 1910, the work of the Intelligence Department, previously carried out in the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration was amalgamated with that of the Tourist Bureau, and the department was designated as the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau Department (1). Its Director, V.H. Ryan, was appointed I July 1911 (2).

In 1917, the Crown Lands and Immigration Office was re-organised, and immigration affairs were transferred to the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau, though immigration remained under the same ministerial portfolio (Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration) until 1924. Ryan was appointed Immigration Officer in addition to his position as Director of the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau Department (3) and Director of the new Intelligence Department in 1924. From that year the Immigration and Intelligence and Tourist Bureau Departments were under the same Director.

In 1917, the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau transferred to the Minister of Education, and remained under this portfolio until 1923. For one year, 1924, the Department was under the Minister of Agriculture. In 1925, both the Immigration and the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau departments were placed under the Minister for Local Government and Immigration, but were transferred again in 1927 to the Minister for Agriculture, Immigration and Repatriation. (4)

In 1928 the name Intelligence and Tourist Bureau was changed to Publicity and Tourist Bureau. The two departments, while remaining distinct, became generally known as the Immigration, Publicity and Tourist Bureau Department.

On 4 January 1972 the Immigration, Publicity and Tourist Bureau Department was amalgamated with the Premier's Department [II] to become known as the Department of the Premier and of Development (5).

The Tourist Division, the Publicity Branch, and the State Immigration Office formed part of this new Department.

On 27 September 1973 the Tourist Division was amalgamated with the Department of Environment and Conservation (6), but in October of that year the Tourist Division was incorporated with the newly-established Department of Tourism, Recreation and Sport (7). The State Immigration Office remained with Premier's until 30 June 1978 when its functions were taken over by the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Ethnic Affairs (8).
