Description

Many single, pregnant girls and women had their babies in pirvately operated 'lying-in' homes. These could be run by major institutions, or simply run from a private home. Either way, such places were required to be licensed and were inspected on a regular basis. An alphabetical name index precedes the volume. Gives name and address of lying-in home licensee, number of licence, date of inspection, name of expectant mother, condition of home and remarks. Occasionally gives adoption details. Contains entries for the Salvation Army Maternity Home (Carrington Street), the Queen's Home (Rose Park), the House of Mercy (Walkerville), and the Roman Catholic Refuge (Fullarton). 1 volume.
