Description
This series records the particulars of children who have become wards of the state and who have later been "boarded-out" with foster parents.
Registers gives Destitute Asylum/Industrial School/Reformatory/Probationary School record number, date of leaving, some personal details of the child, comments regarding parental or home situation, and lists of guardians and referees. Information also includes child's employment, school masters and their remarks, date of Inspector's report and comments regarding child's placement, schooling and general progress. 9 volumes.
The nine ledgers are numbered '1', 'A-G', and 'I'. Ledger 'H' (May 1902 - May 1905) is missing. Try GRG27/6 for the missing period up to December 1908. For the earlier period see GRG28/6.
Volume K was used by a different branch of the State Children's Department from 1913 - see GRS 18812. It is unclear if Volume J is missing from this sequence or if it was never used - Volume K appears to have been printed but re-used for a different purpose.
All ledgers have been indexed.
Index available online (Name Search) or see the Special List to GRG27/5 in Research Centres. Both children and foster parents have been indexed. Indexed by page number then volume number, e.g. 91b refers to Volume B page 91.
Note: Special List entries for the missing ledger 'H' have been taken from GRG27/6, Index to ledgers of children boarded out. The whereabouts of ledger 'H' is unknown.
Digitised copies available. See - https://archives.sa.gov.au/finding-information/discover-our-collection/health-and-welfare/children-state-based-care.
