Permanent. These records have been deemed permanent in accordance with a disposal determination made for all GRGs by the Manager [Director] of State Records and approved by State Records Council on 9 November 1999.;;;;In 1944, the Children's Welfare and Public Relief Department requested permission to use " a number of old admission registers" as "waste paper in connection with the war effort". Unfortunately, the request was approved by the Libraries Board, 16/5/1944 (See GRG56/2).
Description
This series contains registers of admissions to the Industrial School from 1886 to 1929, with gaps for the periods 1893-1897 and 1909-1912 (See Retention Status above). The registers cover both the Industrial School's sites: Magill to 1898, thereafter Edwardstown.
Information provided in the registers includes: child's name, age, date of birth, date of arrival in South Australia, religion, nationality and last place of residence. Also includes information regarding relatives in Australia, reasons for requiring admission, court of committal and recommendation, as well as admission and discharge dates, and proposed whereabouts.
These registers appear to be the set maintained centrally in the Department or the Central Depot. Another set of registers was maintained on site at the Industrial School. Only two of these site registers have survived and have been archived as GRG27/10 and GRG27/11. Entries in these two sets are partially duplicated, although the admission numbers of individuals may not be the same across all volumes. The information in GRG27/9 is the most comprehensive.
