Description
This series contains a register of admissions to the Reformatory Hulk 'Fitzjames'.
The removal of boys from the Magill reformatory site to the Hulk 'Fitzjames' took place on 5 March 1880 (Ref. GRG 28/1, Destitute Board Minutes, 11 March 1880). Transfer back to Magill was effected on 28 May 1891 (State Children's Department annual report, Parliamentary Paper No. 39, 1891 p.8).
Information recorded includes number, name, age, last place of residence, details of relatives, nationality, religion, recommendation, reason for admission, date of admission, date of leaving and destination.
Volume was started in July 1882 with existing admissions dated 1879 - 1882 entered at that time and then continued with new admissions from that point on. GRG 29/110 also records admissions to the Reformatory Hulk but appears to have been started in approximately August 1879 (with existing admissions 1877 - 1879 entered at that time) and is a more complete record of admissions between 1879 - 1882. Both volumes record the same information and it is not clear why two volumes were completed concurrently but it is possible that one volume (probably GRG 29/110) was maintained centrally by the Destitute Board and the other being maintained onboard the Reformatory Hulk (probably this series).
