Description
These reports were probably compiled by the Visiting Officers of the Destitute Asylum, of which the Lying-in Department was a part. The Lying-in Department consisted of a maternity hospital for girls and women in destitute circumstances.
The manuscript reports give date of report, details of girl or woman's family, her financial situation, the circumstances under which she became pregnant and details of the putative father. Also gives date of admission to the Lying-in Department/Destitute Asylum. A small number of women applied but were not subsequently admitted.
5 volumes.
For names of mothers who were admitted see the Special List to GRG28/5, Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum in the Reseach Centre.
Some terms and abbreviations used:
N.B. Native Born i.e born in Australia (NOT an Aboriginal native).
P.F. Putative Father i.e. person expectant mother says is the father.
D.A. Destitute Asylum

It is possible there was a separate admission register to the Lying-in Department for this period, but its whereabouts is not known. However, all of the admitted applicants and their babies were registered in the Register of Admissions to the Destitute Asylum (GRG28/5).
For summary details of infants born in the Destitute Asylum see GRG29/15.
For earlier Lying-in Home admissions see GRG28/13 (1886-1896) and GRG28/34 (1865-1868).
