Description

This series contains a register of licensed foster mothers and children placed with them by the Destitute Board.

The register records: licence number, name of foster mother, 'condition' (marital status) and address of licensee (foster mother), name of child, age, whether legitimate or illegitimate, details of the child's parents (generally notes the mother's name and occupation), amount received per week for maintenance of the child from the parents, dates of visits, and the condition of the child.

The children in this register are infants under the age of three. For details of children boarded out by the Destitute Board, later the State Children's Council or Department, see GRG27/5.

The register is self-indexed, alphabetically by surname, in two sequences: children and foster mothers.

From 1886, foster mothers were licensed by the State Children's Department and their registers can be found in GRG27/17. A later register of children placed with licensed foster mothers can be found in GRG27/18. Other records of foster mothers include reports by the Inspectress of Foster Mothers and Wetnurses (GRG27/19).

Please note that the back cover and end papers have been slightly damaged by fire, but the contents are not affected.

1 volume.
