Description
Employers of state children (i.e. wards of the State) were required to forward wages to the Destitute Persons' Department, which were then banked by the Department until the indenture was complete. The employer was usually the foster parent. On completion wages were then paid out. For example, Eliza E. Lomman was first indentured in 1884 and in 1891 when she left the care of the Department received a Savings Bank Pass Book with 15 pounds, 6 shillings and 8 pence to her credit.
Gives name of young person, date of indenture (apprenticeship), to whom indentured, age and wages paid. Frequently gives signature of young person acknowledging wages have been paid by the Department on leaving its care. Also includes entries for cases where the obligation to pay wages has been waived due to an inability to pay such as the case of Frank McGreevy who was indentured to Sister Mary McKillop, Convent of St. Joseph, Kensington, or where the employer was a relative.
Relates to children who were first indentured between 1872 and 1885, but payments are recorded up to c.1892, when a new account ledger appears to have been started.
