Description
This is the major correspondence series of the South Australian Railways. Correspondence files consist of letters and other documents received by the Department, memoranda of action taken, internal reports or inquiries, and copies of letters sent.
A correspondence file generally only relates to one particular subject or individual, but documents received over a number of years may be the placed in the same file. The file cover may be annotated with the file numbers of related files.
This series is a continuation of GRG 42/1 Correspondence files ('RC' files) of the Railways Commissioner. The change from the 'RC' prefix to the 'SAR' prefix occurred at the start of 1929.
From 1975 to 1977 the Rail Division of the State Transport Authority continued creating SAR files using 'South Australian Railways' file covers. In 1978 the file covers are printed with 'State Transport Authority - Railway Divison' but continue to have a 'SAR' prefix. This series ended in 1978 with a reorganisation of the Railway Division of the STA. However, after the Commonwealth takeover of non-urban lines in 1978, the files continued to be added to by Australian National Railways.
Arranged by annual single number with 'SAR' [South Australian Railways] prefix.
