Description
This series contains counterfoils of certificates of limited exemption from the provisions of the Aborigines Act, 1934 - 1939. A certificate of limited exemption meant that an individual, and his or her descendants, were no longer subject to the Aborigines Act, 1934 - 1939, or the control of the Aborigines' Protection Board, for a period of time. Most recipients were later granted full exemption, see GRG 52/19 for certificates of unconditional exemption.
Information recorded includes name, address and date of exemption. Whether the exemption was revoked, or granted unconditionally is also recorded.
10 volumes of counterfoils. Arranged chronologically. Certificates are numbered 1 - 500.
This series has been indexed by the Aboriginal Information Management System (AIMS), a searchable database of names of Aboriginal people identified in key series within the State Records' collection. As at 2015, the database comprises more than 140,000 entries and indexes tribal names, nicknames, age, sex, location, description of record, and a State Records reference number. Safeguards are in place to protect sensitive information about individuals.
A search of AIMS is available via the State Records' Aboriginal Access Team.
