Description
This series contains photographs that were maintained by the Aborigines Department, probably for publicity and scholarly purposes. References to the collection of photographs can be found in a number of Aborigines Office dockets (see GRG52/1).
The photographs were taken mainly at Mission Stations, between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries. The photographs came from a variety of sources, including the Government Photolithographer, staff at the missions, local constables and private photographers. One photographer was Dr William Ramsay Smith, who was the City Coroner and Inspector of Anatomy.
The photographs do not contain material of a secret/sacred nature, but do contain images of deceased persons. Few individuals have been identified by name.
3 folders of access copy prints are available for public access, see Units 3, 4, and 5, and 1 folder of 35 mm negatives, see Unit 6.
For listing of photographs see the Special List to GRG 52/45 in the Research Centre.
Photographs arranged by an imposed numerical system.
