Description

This series contains the correspondence dockets of the Immigration Officer from 1911 to 1924. From 1911 to 1917, the Immigration Officer was located in the office of the Commissioner of Crown Lands and Immigration. From 1917 onwards, he was part of the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau.

The files contain letters and other documents received by the Immigration Officer, memoranda of action taken, internal reports or inquiries, and usually copies of letters sent. A correspondence file generally only relates to one particular subject or individual, but documents received over a number of years may be the placed in the same file. The file cover may be annotated with the file numbers of related files.

Relates to all aspects of immigration including domestic helpers, boy migrants, refund applicants, boarding officers reports, nominations for free passage, industry and trade in South Australia etc.

In the post World War One period, British ex-servicemen could nominate for a free passage to South Australia under a joint British and Commonwealth scheme. These applications have been placed inside correspondence dockets rather than being maintained as a separate set.

This series ended in 1924. Correspondence relating to immigration after this date was filed in the correspondence files of the Intelligence and Tourist Bureau (see GRG7/24).

For index see online listing (Name or Keyword Search). The series is also partially indexed by GRG7/18, Card index to applications for assisted passage as agricultural labourers, 1921- 1924 (see Special List to GRG7/18 in the Research Centre).

Arranged by annual single number with 'Imm' (Immigration) prefix.
