Description
The series comprises files of the Colonial Surgeon's Office, 1850-1914, Inspector General of Hospitals' Office, 1914-1937, Department of Inspector General of Hospitals, 1937-1940, Hospitals Department, 1940-1978.
Records in the initial boxes of this series do not have annual single number file numbers.
Unit 1 consists of correspondence and circulars relating to the Lunatic Asylum, 1850 - 1857.
Files cover appointments, salaries, staff leave and entitlements, authorisations to purchase supplies and equipment, building works, repairs and maintenance, and other administrative issues.
There is little information about patients in hospitals, other than attempts to recover payments for treatment and occasional reports about exceptional incidents.
