Description
This series comprises the correspondence files of the Commissioner of Civil Defence from 1941 to 1948 and the Liaison Officer for Civil Defence from 1949 to 1961. Some documents predate the file dates.
These records document the activities of the Commissioner during and after World War II, including press clippings, evacuation plans, fire-fighting equipment, supply of blackout materials, aid posts, protective clothing and gas masks, bomb disposal, first aid, shelter trenches, aeroplane watching service, air raid shelters, the Darwin evacuation, enemy aliens, precautions taken in regional areas, etc.
Also included are files relating to administrative matters such as staff leave, meeting minutes, staff appointments and resignations and the installation of telephones.
After 1948 and the cessation of the position of the Commissioner of Civil Defence, the volume of dockets created within the series dwindles and the subjects relate more to the Commonwealth Civil Defence committee and also include press clippings and internal memos relating to the Maralinga nuclear tests in 1957.
As at 07/06/2010 the location of any control records for these files is unknown.
