Description

This series contains 2-tiered numeric correspondence files originally created by the Aboriginal Advancement Committee within the Department for Community Welfare, which were later maintained by the Office of Aboriginal Affairs, and 2-tiered, later 3-tiered, numeric correspondence files created by the Office of Aboriginal Affairs and successors.

From approximately 1989, file numbers contained a year suffix indicating the year of file creation. There was a number of organisational changes, including name changes, throughout the date range during which these files were created, resulting in changes to the system of arrangement of the files.

Consignment 1: Two-tiered Aboriginal Advancement Committee file covers with stickers indicating the Office of Aboriginal Affairs, later two-tiered Office of Aboriginal Affairs file covers.

Consignment 2: Two-tiered Aboriginal Advancement Committee file covers with stickers indicating the Office of Aboriginal Affairs, later two-tiered number Office of Aboriginal Affairs file covers. Also includes some three-tiered Department of Community Welfare file covers. These three-tiered number files probably belong in GRS4164, although they may have been relinquished to the Office of Aboriginal Affairs on its creation in 1979.

Consignment 3: Two-tiered Office of Aboriginal Affairs file covers, later (approx 1989) two-tiered numerical files with a two-digit year suffix in blank file covers that do not indicate the Department of origin.

Consignment 4: Three-tiered numeric files with a year suffix in blank file covers that do not indicate the Department of origin. Sometimes the year suffix is a year range, i.e. 93-05. The documents in the file do not alwways contain the same year suffix as the file in which the document is held, rather contains a year suffix for the year that the particular document was created.

Consignment 5: Two-tiered Division of State Aboriginal Affairs stamped file covers, later (approx 2000) three-tiered Department of State Aboriginal Affairs pre-printed file covers. Some of the two-tiered files contain a part number making the files look like they are three-tiered, and some of the three-tiered files contain a part number making the files look like they are four-tiered.

Note: The Office of Aboriginal Affairs was a policy unit created in 1979, which liaised with service provision agencies such as the Department of Community Welfare. Its successor was the Department/Division of State Aboriginal Affairs.
