Description
This series contains an admission register kept by the South Australian Youth Remand and Assessment Centre (SAYRAC). SAYRAC commenced operations in 1979, located on the site previously known as Vaughan House. Its function was to provide secure residential care for young offenders aged 10 to 18 years. Initially it housed both boys and girls in four residential units, two for girls and two for boys. In July 1990 the under-15 boys unit and the girls units were amalgamated to form a co-educational unit.
The register was kept by hand in a standard government diary. Information captured includes the date of admission, name, date of birth, address, charge, details of release and release date. Entries are made in order of admission to the unit in chronological order.
Notes on the front cover indicate it was the admission book for the Girls Unit from October 1983 to August 1990, and from November 1990 it was the admission book for the Co-Educational Unit. Entries in the book begin in March 1985 and, as the front cover has been separated from the spine, it is suspected that some pages are missing.
An admission book from July 1973 to Oct 1983 is archived in GRS 6641/1. This previous volume records admssions to Vaughan House up to 1979, then the girls unit of SAYRAC.
Chronological system of arrangement.
