Description

This series comprises a single register giving results of examinations of patients at Northfield Mental Hospital pursuant to Section 83, later 73 of the Mental Defectives Act, 1913-1935, which states:

"Every patient shall, during his detention as a patient in any institution, be examined at least six times in every year during the first three years and subsequently at least once in every year, by the superintendent of such institution as to his mental soundness or defect and his general health ...".

The registers give admission number, name of patient, admission date(s), mental and physical condition at time of admission, and then go on to record the mental condition and general health of the patient for the required period. A 'remarks' column is included which was used to record any dates of transfer between institutions (e.g. Parkside).

From 1930 there are gaps in the recording of admission numbers indicating that some patients were no longer at Northfield (i.e. having been discharged, returned or transferred to Parkside, etc). The listing of patients is repeated for each successive year.

Chronological system of arrangement.
