Description
The Court Liaison Unit belonged to the Field Services Division of the Department for Family and Community Services. The unit provided a specialist youth court social work service to the Department. It liaised between the agency's workers and the Youth Court; presented information and written reports from other agency workers about young offenders for appearances in the Youth Court; provided information and advice to relevant agency workers about reports required for the Youth Court; provided information about procedures and protocol in the Youth Court; and represented the Department in the Youth Court where necessary.
The Court Liaison Unit moved into the Youth Justice directorate of Children, Youth and Family Services, Department for Families and Communities, in 2004 and was renamed Court Services in 2009.
A social worker from Court Services attended hearings at the Youth Court, whether or not the young person had already been sent to Magill Training Centre, and the information was brought back to be entered onto the court result card. A card was occasionally requested by the Court because of the wealth of information it contained.
The cards measure 202mm x 127mm and are used on both sides. There are fields for the client's Name and Date of Birth, and the Worker's name and Office. The columns are headed Date, Court, Offence/s and Court Result.
Some cards have been stamped "All CLU paperwork forwarded to", and name of the office to which documents were sent for inclusion in client files is handwritten and dated.
Recordkeeping system: Year of birth, then alphabetically by family name.
