Description

This series contains the patient admission registers for the Mareeba Babies' Hospital.

The registers record: the patient's registration number; full name; sex; date of birth; date of admission; condition on admission (in convulsions, premature, well-nourished); disease; classification number; date of discharge, transfer or death; result (cured, relieved, unrelieved, died or remaining in hospital); transferred (to which hospital); number of days spent in hospital; name of parents; address; religion; phone number; by whom recommended; and Honorary Medical Officer (the doctor in charge of the patient's case). In the 1960s, another column was added for patients who had insurance.

The 'Classification Number' is not entirely clear, but it appears to be related to the patient's disease. For example: patients with indigestion were given the number 118, dyspepsia was 103, and malnutrition and dietary issues were 152. A new classification system appears to have begun in the 1960s.

Patients suffering from an infectious disease (such as scarlet fever, measles or diphtheria), were recorded in the 'treatment' column under 'I'. A 'T' for treatment or 'S.T.' for surgical treatment is recorded in the treatment column if a patient left the hospital without being cured - presumably for home treatment.

From 1963, some patients are listed as 'Intermediate Patients' and these patients only spent a few days in hospital and suffered from tonsillitis or appendicitis or other similar diseases.

There appears to be a gap at the beginning of the series, as the hospital opened in 1917 but the first volume does not start until August 1920. This first volume also starts with patient register number 216. There is also a gap between 1947 and 1954.

By 1969, the hospital did not exist as a separate entity and was the paediatric section of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital used the register to register children patients until August 1972.

The last volume also contains entries for elderly adult patients, presumably admitted to a geriatric ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, from August 1972 until July 1976. The patient details are the same as the child patients, except that the next-of-kin is listed instead of parents.

Arranged chronologically, with gaps.
