Description

This series contains admission registers for the South Australian School for the Deaf Pre-School, later known as the South Australian Pre-School for Hearing and Hearing Impaired Children, then Townsend Pre-School for Hearing Impaired and Hearing Children from 1971 to 1994.

The registers were completed on standard Education Department-issued admission registers. Infomation varies over time but generally includes: register number, name of student, gender, date of admission, date of birth, religion, name and occupation of enrolling parent or guardian, address, and reason for leaving school.

Enrolments date from 8 February 1971 through to July 1994, soon before the pre-school closed. The first 18 enrolments have out-of-sequence enrolment numbers and were likely recorded in another register first. Enrolment 19 is dated 28 April 1975 and subsequent enrolments are chronological and sequentially numbered.

Volume 1 only records information on the left-hand page and does not include grades or attendance. The 'last school' column appears to note where the student went after leaving the pre-school and not which school they attended before.

Volume 2 records children who were hearing-impaired (from September 1980 - July 1994) and Volume 3 records children who could hear (from June 1981 - July 1994). Volume 1 appears to record both, although it does not state on the register if a child was hearing-impaired or hearing.

There is some overlap between the volumes, with hearing-impaired children appearing in both Volume 1 and 2. Volume 1 was likely recorded first and then Volume 2 created at a later date and then added to. Volume 1 does not include any child registed in Volume 3.
