Description

These plans are engineering drawings of steam locomotives and their mechanical parts. The numbering system works as follows:

In the plan number 15-L-68918,

- 15 represents the engineering drawing category (in this case, superheater header, elements and fittings)
- L represents locomotive (to distinguish plans in this series from other S.A.R. plans)
- 68918 is a unique drawing number (i.e. this is the 68918th drawing in the series).

There are 56 categories in all, as follows:

1 - 2 General arrangements
3 - 20 Boilers
21 - 23 Frames
24 - 35 Cylinders and motion
36 - Booster
37 - 38 Wheels
39 - 40 Axleboxes
41 - 42 Spring rigging
43 - Brake rigging
44 - Mechanical stoker
45 - 55 - Miscellaneous

The last category, 56, comprises diesel/electric locomotives and at the time archiving these plans were held by either Australian National Railways or Australian Archives.

Each drawing number is prefixed by a letter (from A to E) indicating the size of the plan. These sizes are, approximately: A: 1060cm x 680cm B: 530cm x 340cm C: 260cm x 170cm D: 130cm x 85cm E: 65cm x 40cm.

Many of these plans are on tracing paper, and as a result are extremely fragile.

A consignment list of plans created in this series is available. Plans which were transferred to State Recrods have been highlighted.

These plans are arranged first by category number, then by the plan number.
