Description

This series consists of correspondence files of the Aborigines Department, later the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, from 1959 - 1971. Earlier files can be found in GRG52/1, which also contains files up to and including 1969.

The files cover all aspects of the administration of Aboriginal affairs, and contains files relating to individuals, families and communities, as well as policy matters.

Also includes files from the Port Augusta Branch of the Aborigines Department, which strictly speaking are a separate series. Copies of letters sent within the Port Augusta files are prefixed 'ADPA' or 'DAAPA'.

Arranged by annual single number.

In 1970 the Department of Aboriginal Affairs amalgamated with the Social Welfare Department to form the Department of Social Welfare and Aboriginal Affairs. At the same time the new Department changed to a multiple number filing system. Files created with this system are to be found in GRG29/6.
