Description
This series contains minutes from the Local Board of Health of the Town, later City, from 1879 to 1995.
The Local Board of Health reported on public health matters in the Port Adelaide district, including: insanitary conditions of properties, outbreaks of infectious diseases, establishment of 'conveniences' (public toilets), removal of waste or other rubbish, and investigating 'nuisances'.
Health Officers regularly conducted inspections of properties in the district and provided notices of insanitary conditions to property owners. The minutes include the number, name of owner, address, and name of occupier/tenant for the notices, but exact details are not recorded.
A sample of insanitary condition notices from 1925 to 1982 can be found in GRS 686.
In 1919, minutes for the Board of Management of the Port Adelaide Isolation Hospital are included. The hospital was located at Port Adelaide School and treated pneumonic influenza cases. The hospital opened on 17 May 1919 and closed by early July, with patients then treated at home or at the Exhibition Hospital. There are frequent references to influenza in the area throughout 1919 and 1920.
Arranged chronologically.
