Description

This series contains a series of index cards relating to Aboriginal individuals. The cards seem to originate from several departments including the Aborigines' Department, the Children's Welfare and Public Relief Department, and the Social Welfare Department.

This set of cards was collated by Marjorie Angas, Department of Aboriginal Affairs Welfare Officer, Special Project relating to Huntington's Chorea. Part of the project was constructing genealogies to identify and assist Aboriginal people affected by Huntington's Disease, a genetic disorder which entered the Aboriginal community after a white man suffering from the disease married an Aboriginal woman in the late 19th century. It is likely that these cards were gathered as part of the research.

The cards record differing information. Some cards record assistance provided (fares, rations, etc.), some cards record work placements, and some cards record children who were placed with unlicensed foster mothers. The genealogical information recorded on the cards varies depending on the purpose of the card but may include: name, date and place of birth, address, marital status, name of spouse, date and place of marriage, no. of children, kinship details regarding name of mother and/or father, education level, trade qualifications, special skills/experience, physical disabilities, appearance, locality preferred, and date of death.

Series was transferred via the South Australian Museum, which was bequeathed the records on the death of Marjorie Angas who had acquired some historical records of the department in the course of her career and research.

Arranged alphabetically by surname.
