Missing Files:

These records were housed in the basement of the Government Offices in Victoria Square when inspected by the Archives in 1960. The docketed correspondence was scattered over the floor and disarranged. After transfer to the Archives a large quantity of it was found to have been eaten by white ants or destroyed by water and mould. For these reasons many affected dockets were burned. Transfer Sheet No. 4 (GRG56/12).

The Destitute Board was responsible to the Chief Secretary, consequently many Destitute Board matters were referred to the Chief Secretary's Office for attention. See GRG 24/8, Indexes to the correspondence of the Chief Secretary's Office, pages headed 'Destitute Board'. References to the Destitute Board's half yearly reports are also to be found in these indexes.
