Papers, reports and circulars - State Recruiting Committee (WWI) (GRG7/131)

The State Recruiting Committee was a federally appointed and regulated body, consisting mostly of members of Parliament, led by the Director General of Recruiting in Canberra. The State Recruiting Committee was to oversee and co-ordinate all recruitment efforts within a State. In South Australia, it closely co-operated with the State War Council, which was the State body that oversaw all efforts to sustain the war. John Newland was Chairman, Edward Lucas was Vice-Chairman and Paddy Glynn was a Member.

This series consists of one leatherbound volume, containing the bound papers for the State Recruiting Committee as kept and compiled by Mr Walter Hutley, its General Organiser, for 1917, and a loose bundle of papers of the same Committee running from its inception in December 1916 until the end of the war.

Many papers consist of circulars from the Director General of Recruiting to the State Recruiting Committee, and from the State Recruiting Committee to its Local Recruiting Committees, its Organisers, and related committees, such as the State Women's Recruiting Committee and the Win the War League. The circulars direct how recruitment efforts should be carried out, and what details and guidelines recruiters should attend to.
