Description

This series consists of index cards to prospective migrants and their dependents who received a group nomination for a free or assisted passage to South Australia. The State of South Australia administered this migration scheme in conjunction with the Commonwealth of Australia.

Group nominations enabled employers to nominate UK migrants to travel to South Australia to fill vacant positions that could not be filled locally. Rather than nominating individual migrants, employers provided details about the number of employees required and their skills, age range, etc, with the selection being undertaken on their behalf in London. Some group nominations were for hundreds of employees over many years, while others were for one-off recruitment of small numbers of individuals. Nominating employers included both private and public sector employers, e.g. hospitals. Group nominations also included unaccompanied children under the Commonwealth Child Migration Scheme. Group nominators were responsible for providing the migrants with accommodation upon arrival in the state.

The cards record SG number, name, age, occupation, religion, dependants, date of arrival and name of ship (or 'air' for arrivals by plane) and remarks (generally address in South Australia or name of employer). Some cards give next of kin on the back.

See GRS 16517 and GRS 16519 for other records relating to group nominations.

For index cards to migrants nominated under other schemes in operation during this time period see GRG7/32, GRG7/33, GRG7/34, GRG7/35 and GRG7/36.

Arranged alphabetically by name of prospective migrant.
