Description

This series comprises application files relating to selected immigrants from the United Kingdom, predominantly immigrants transferred from other States and those selected under various immigration schemes, including the following:

- 'Dreadnought scheme' - agricultural workers transferred from New South Wales.

- 'Balliol Boy's Club immigration scheme' - agricultural workers applying through the Balliol Boy's Club, Balliol College, Oxford.

- Tradesmen nominated by the SA Builders and Contractor's Association, including bricklayers, carpenters, plumbers, builders, etc.

- Teachers nominated by the Director of Education during a visit to the U.K. in 1923, resulting in 66 young male teachers emigrating to South Australia. (1)

- domestic workers.

Some applications are for family groups.

The applications were made under the provisions of the Empire Settlement Act, 1922, encouraged child and youth migration. During the 1920s, there were new immigration agreements between State and Commonwealth governments within Australia, between the British and Australian governments and between government and non-government organisations. The Commonwealth assumed the selection, medical examination and transport of prospective immigrants; the states requisitioned the numbers and categories they wanted, and arranged settlement and after-care. The Joint Commonwealth and States Scheme of 1921 formalised these arrangements and the Empire Settlement Act was subsequently passed. (2)

Includes completed forms of application noting personal details such as address in United Kingdom, referees, name of parent of guardian, date of arrival in South Australia and name of ship. Files also contain correspondence between applicant and Immigration Department once applicants arrived in South Australia. In some cases the 'Certificate of Identity' is attached to the file, which includes a small photograph of the applicant.

The files are arranged by file number, including numbers 1 - 1595.
