Description

This series comprises the discharge papers of the Adelaide Lunatic Asylum and the Parkside Lunatic Asylum, for the period 1846 to 1909. Also included are papers relating to discharges on trial. The majority of papers are from the Adelaide Lunatic Asylum.

Discharge papers dating after 1874 are sporadic as they were generally filed with the admission papers [see GRS 13461]. This series ended in c.1909, when all discharge papers were filed with the admission papers.

Information varies over time, but generally gives name of patient, date of patient, discharge number, signatures of Official Visitors authorising discharge, and recommendation from the Resident Medical Officer at the Asylum. Some discharges take the form of an application from a relative to remove a patient from the Asylum.

Prior to 1861, papers are arranged chronologically, thereafter by annual single number (discharge number). Discharge-on-trial papers were merely dated. Some later discharge papers also have the patient's admission number recorded on the cover.
