Description
This series contains assessment books for the District Council of Warooka from 1888 to 1996.
Assessment books are used to record rates levied on properties in Council areas.
Information varies over time, but generally assessment books give name of occupier of property, name of owner of property, situation of property, description of property, amount levied, when paid and arrears.
Assessment books can be used to determine when a house was first built, and later additions made, as the description of the property will reflect the changes, and the amount of rate levied will increase.
Consignment one contains assessment books for the period from 1888 to 1961.
Consignment two contains one assessment book covering the date range from July 1961 to August 1996.
Consignment 3 contains a large computer-generated print out of Council assessments from October 1992.
In front of the computer printouts is a group of A4 lined pages with handwritten headings. The headings represent towns or areas within the Council district. The headings read: Corny Point, Foul Bay, Marion Bay, The Drain and Warooka. There are sub-headings for, Assess. No., Owner and Property Description. There is no other identifying information - these may be additions to the original list. It appears that the listing may represent the year 1992/1993 which was not included in consignment one or in the assessment book contained in consignment 2.
The books are generally arranged chronologically, then alphabetically by surname of rate payer.
