Description
This series comprises various different types of duty log books and other record types for the South Australian Youth Training Centre (SAYTC) and predecessors and South Australian Youth Remand and Assessment Centre [SAYRAC] and predecessors. Other logs for these Centres may be found in GRS 6638.
The bulk of these logs date from 1974 to 1996, although there are some other record types in this series which date earlier (for example, postage stamp book for the Boys Reformatory from 1961).
The main sets of logs in this series relate to the following institutions and units:
Vaughan House
- Tasman, 1974-1977
Vaughan House, later SAYRAC
- Assessment 1 & 2 (girls), 1973 - 1983
- Girls, 1983-1993
- Co-Ed & Boys 1990-1993
McNally Training Centre, later SAYTC, later Magill Training Centre
- Assessment 1/Rubicon/Unit 1, 1976 - 1996
- Assessment 2/Antara/Unit 3, 1976 - 1996
- Assessment 3/Phoenix, 1975-1984
- Assessment 4/Boys 'A' (Nashville) & Boys 'B' (Wynarka), 1975 -1991
- Assessment 5, 1975-1977
- Sturt/Unit 4, 1974 - 1996
- Grenfell/Unit 2, 1977-1995
- Glandore, 1980-1981
- Unit 5 (girls), 1993-1996
Due to the changes in unit names and organisation, the duplication of unit names, and the inconsistent labelling of the volumes, the provenance of these registers is not definitively known. A cross reference of names in each log against admission records would be required.
The different types of logs in this series includes, among others: movement, programme, routine, observation, detention, Centre Duty Officer [CDO], day book, Matron, medical, visitors, maintenance, incident and separation logs.
Types of information recorded may include: Behaviour and moods of youth; Disruptions and action taken; Security checks; Physical check of dangerous materials and objects check; Maintenance needed; Youth currently in detention, length and type of order, date of release and type of offence; Detention record; Names of visitors and phone calls; Name, age and date of birth; Date and time of placement; Reasons for placement; Alternatives tried prior to placement; Authority for length of stay; Date and time of release; Signatories - Residential Worker, Senior and Supervisor; Medication details; Medical appointments; Absconding details - how, when, where and action taken; Admittance and discharges.
Some of the logs in this series do not record the names of those in the Centres.
